Have you learnt how to read your birth chart? The most dangerous mistake is to think you’ve understood it

Venus in the fifth house and suddenly you’re expecting a new romance. An empty fifth house and you worry that you won’t have children. A few squares and you start to believe that your life will always be difficult.

Astrology is easy once you’ve learnt the basics. It becomes much more challenging when you have to combine them, assess their significance and decide what you can actually tell someone.

That is also where one of its biggest pitfalls lies: a little knowledge can give you more confidence than is warranted.

Those of you who have spoken to me may know that I give private astrology lessons, mainly to students from abroad. Most of them are based in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. Through this process, I often see how differently people approach astrology — but also how common certain mistakes remain, regardless of the country.

With my students from the United Kingdom, I most often find an approach similar to our own. With some students from Australia and America, we first need to clarify exactly what we are studying. They have been introduced to astrology within a broader context that includes energy work, spiritual practices and tarot.

These may coexist within a person’s interests, but they are not the same method. Astrology involves calculations, temporal cycles and specific rules of interpretation. In my lessons, I emphasise structured thinking: how did we arrive at a conclusion? What evidence supports it? What else could what we are seeing mean?;

First mistake: A simple journey turns into a whole life story

The first and most common mistake is to attribute a major event to a minor, everyday occurrence.

Let’s suppose that Venus transits the fifth house of someone who is already in a relationship. A beginner might conclude that they will meet someone else and fall in love again.

That’s a huge leap to make based on so little data.

In astrological interpretation, this transit may be linked to more flirting, enjoyment, creativity or a rekindling of an existing relationship. Romantic interest is one possible manifestation of this. A new relationship, however, is already a much more specific outcome. And a parallel relationship even more so.

After all, not even Casanova starts a new romance every time Venus changes sign. That would require a diary, a secretary and quite a few extra hours in the day.

For an event that is out of the ordinary, I look for a broader context of indications. I examine the slower planetary cycles, the aspects to the natal chart, and whether multiple techniques point to a related theme.

A brief passage may serve as a trigger for a larger cycle. On its own, however, it does not justify an entire story.

We may need to examine a New Moon, a retrograde, a planetary conjunction or personal techniques such as the solar return, the lunar return and the Venus return. The aim is not to pile up as many factors as possible until we arrive at the prediction we want. It is to check whether they are genuinely connected and whether there are any indications that challenge our initial assumption.

A multi-planet aspect in the twelfth house, for example, is not automatically an indication of a secret relationship. The ‘hidden’ aspect could relate to many different things. If we arbitrarily choose the most dramatic interpretation, we are creating a scenario rather than making a careful interpretation.

Second mistake: You read your birth chart as if it were a contract for your future

The second mistake is to treat the birth chart as a detailed blueprint for life.

«At exactly what age will I get married?»

«How many children will I have?»

«Since I have several planets in the fifth house, will I have a large family?»

In astrological tradition, there is the concept of the natal promise: the framework of possibilities and themes that we examine in a birth chart. This does not mean that every symbol translates literally into a specific event.

Having many planets in the fifth house does not necessarily mean having that many children. An empty fifth house does not mean the absence of children. A comprehensive analysis is required, including, amongst other things, the ruler of the house and its aspects.

And above all, we need to remember that we are dealing with a human being.

Do they want to become a parent? What are their living circumstances? What sort of relationship do they want? What opportunities and choices do they have in the country where they live? Sexual orientation does not determine the desire for parenthood, but social and legal circumstances can influence the available pathways.

A sign that an astrologer might interpret as an indication of a large family takes on a different context in a society where having two or three children is the norm, and a different one where large families are more.

We cannot simply remove a child’s number from the chart whilst ignoring the person’s entire life. Nor should we use astrology to draw conclusions about fertility, which require medical assessment.

If you’re trying to understand your own birth chart and the piecemeal interpretations are confusing you, you can ask me to carry out a professional analysis of it. I will examine the indications holistically, so that you can gain a more comprehensive picture of the potential, challenges and key patterns in your chart.

Request your personal analysis here, via Buy Me a Coffee. I will prepare it carefully and send it to you in writing via email, so that you can refer back to it whenever you need to.

Mistake number three: You believe that easy aspects bring success and difficult ones bring failure

The third mistake is to believe that a «difficult birth chart» means a life of failure and an «easy birth chart» guarantees success.

In astrological terms, we often speak of the higher and lower expressions of a sign. That is to say, how a similar pattern can manifest itself differently depending on a person’s self-awareness, choices and circumstances.

Tension can be expressed as a constant conflict. However, it can become perseverance, assertiveness or the ability to cope with challenging situations. A natural aptitude can be harnessed as a talent. It can also be taken for granted and remain untapped.

I have studied the life stories of successful people who, at first glance, did not seem to «scream» huge financial success. Their journey involved hard work, consistency and seizing opportunities. I have also seen charts with indications that are traditionally considered favourable, without this automatically translating into corresponding success.

In my experience, quite a few of the charts of people who have achieved a great deal have contained significant tensions. This does not prove that difficult aspects lead to success. It does, however, explain why I do not regard them as a curse.

In interpretation, squares and oppositions can describe points of friction that motivate people. Difficulty does not guarantee growth, and there is no need to idealise suffering. Support, resources and opportunities are also of immense importance.

Similarly, a large triangle can symbolise natural flow and ease. It is neither a guarantee of success nor a sign of laziness. The question is what a person does with the things that come most effortlessly to them.

That is why I do not recommend that you attempt to interpret a chart — whether your own or someone else’s — as if you could provide definitive answers, when you do not yet have a thorough understanding of the method and its limitations.

You can study, observe and formulate hypotheses. A responsible interpretation, however, requires you to be able to explain your reasoning, consider alternatives and say «I don’t have enough evidence».

Absolute certainty is not a measure of competence. Sometimes it is precisely the point at which you need to stop and take a fresh look.

Particularly in our own chart, desire and fear can easily influence our interpretation. When we really want to get back together, we see signs of a reunion everywhere. When we fear a break-up, every challenging aspect seems like a warning.

Astrology is a symbolic interpretative framework, not a scientifically proven way of predicting specific future events. Familiarity with a wider range of techniques requires greater care in the way we speak, particularly when our words may influence decisions.

Have you ever tried to interpret your chart, only for things to turn out differently in the end? Perhaps an indication you’d read as a «certain event» manifested in a way you hadn’t anticipated?;

To date, I haven’t organised any specific courses for a Greek audience. However, if you’re interested, please do get in touch with me. I teach a wide range of traditional and modern techniques in Western astrology, along with what I have learnt through practical experience by studying real charts of real people.

My aim is for you to learn how to piece together the clues, assess their significance and understand when you have enough evidence to draw conclusions — and when further investigation is needed.

Send me at info@astrina.gr, on the subject of «Specialised astrology courses», so we can discuss your level and what you’d like to learn.
