What does a lost inheritance have to do with\u2026 your break-up?;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What connection could there possibly be between a family dispute over an inheritance and a break-up that takes place twenty or thirty years later?;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first glance, absolutely none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One concerns money, property and legal proceedings. The other concerns love, trust and human relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet, through my work with systemic representation, I have found that the connection between the two is often much deeper than one might imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I do not mean to suggest that a family dispute \u201ccauses\u201d a break-up. Nor do I mean to suggest that everyone who experiences difficulties in their relationships is carrying family trauma. Human relationships are complex and influenced by many factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are, however, cases where an emotion that remained unresolved in one generation seems to resurface, in a different form, in the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And this is perhaps the most striking feature of the systemic representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event does not necessarily happen again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experience is repeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The story of a man who always felt\u2026 second best<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some time ago, a man came to a session who had grown tired of constantly going through the same pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It didn\u2019t matter how different his relationships were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It didn\u2019t matter if his companions had different personalities or led different lifestyles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ending always seemed the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In almost every serious relationship, a third person would turn up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes she was his partner\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other times, a friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes an ex-partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alternatively, a family member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One person was gaining more and more influence in the relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The balance of power was shifting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in the end, he was left on the sidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relationships were falling apart, but what hurt him most was not the break-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The feeling that someone else had taken his place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That he could no longer fit in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That he had been eliminated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u00abIt\u2019s not normal for this to keep happening\u00bb<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

That was the first thing he said to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abIt can\u2019t be a coincidence. It can\u2019t be that every time, someone turns up who ends up influencing everything.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a pattern keeps recurring, it is worth exploring it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because it is certain that there is a specific explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But why is it that repetition often suggests that something deeper is seeking recognition?.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The news that nobody saw coming<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As the systemic representation progressed, a family history emerged which, until then, he had considered unrelated to his problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His mother had been disinherited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not just in financial terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She had effectively been cut off from her father\u2019s family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had lost not only his wealth, but also his sense of belonging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had not been recognised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had not been vindicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For years, he had been carrying the burden of that experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The son never lost his fortune<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

And yet\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He missed something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In every significant relationship, he felt that someone else was taking his place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That someone else was more important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That someone else was making the decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He did not repeat the draw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He kept repeating the block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And this is a distinction that we often encounter in systemic representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation is changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The feeling remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

When the family \u201cspeaks\u201d through its motifs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to the philosophy of systemic representation, every member of a family has their place within the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When someone is excluded, forgotten or treated unfairly, an imbalance is created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This approach argues that, in certain cases, subsequent generations may unconsciously express this imbalance through their own experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because they are doomed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because there is some sort of \u00abcurse\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But because an important family event never found its place in the family history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is important to clarify that this represents the perspective of systemic representation and does not constitute a scientifically substantiated mechanism that explains all human difficulties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not just about inheritances<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This story was prompted by a draw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It could, however, relate to any significant family event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man who was cast out by his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A child who was not recognised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An ancestor who died young and was never mentioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A major economic disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A break-up full of bitterness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A loss that was never mourned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In systemic representation, each such story can serve as a point of exploration when recurring patterns are observed in subsequent generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Why is understanding often not enough?;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I have met many people who know exactly why they struggle in their relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are capable of self-analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To explain their fears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To describe their childhood experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When they fall in love again, they react in exactly the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowledge is valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, this does not mean that it is always enough to change a deeply ingrained pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The systemic approach takes a different view of the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not limited to storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is an experiential process that allows relationships, dynamics and emotions to emerge which often cannot be grasped through logical analysis alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Could this apply to you too?;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ask yourself\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you noticed the same pattern repeating itself in different relationships?;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you feel like you\u2019re always left until last?;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That they\u2019re choosing someone else?;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That you find it difficult to maintain a stable relationship, even though it\u2019s only the people involved who change?;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or does the same pattern crop up in your finances, at work, or even in your friendships?;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that the cause lies within your family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps, however, it is worth exploring whether there is a story that has not yet been told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

When history changes, so does life<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most important aims of systemic representation is not to change the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is about changing our relationship with the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People who were once excluded should be recognised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To give a place to those who have been marginalised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let a descendant cease to unconsciously bear a burden that may not belong to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many people, this realisation marks the beginning of a different path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because other people are changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But why does the perspective from which they relate to the world change?.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Could it be that you were the one who started the problem?;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you feel as though your life is constantly repeating the same chapter, perhaps it\u2019s worth stopping to ask yourself not just:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abWhat am I doing wrong?\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And here\u2019s a different question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abWhat story might be repeating itself through me?\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, the answer isn\u2019t to be found among your last few options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s part of a story that began long before you were born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
