The astrological houses are one of the most fundamental pillars of astrology. If the signs of the zodiac show how an energy is expressed and the planets show what is happening, then the houses reveal where it all manifests in your life. It is the backdrop upon which your personal story plays out.
What are houses?;
The houses are 12 sectors resulting from the division of the celestial cycle, based on your time and place of birth. Each house is associated with specific experiences, situations and areas of life - from personality and relationships, to career, finances and your inner development.
They are not just theoretical “boxes”. They are living fields of action, activated whenever a planet or aspect touches them.
Where does the first house start?;
The first house begins with the Ascendant - the sign rising on the horizon at the moment of your birth. This sign is completely personal and determines the structure of your entire chart.
From there on, the other houses follow in a circular pattern, counterclockwise. Each subsequent house represents a natural progression of experience: from “I” (1st) to “together” (7th) and finally to “the whole” (12th).
What are the edges of the houses?;
Edges are the boundaries that separate one house from another. The most important cusp is that of the 1st house (Ascendant), while the cusp of the 10th house (Midheaven), which relates to your outward path and image, is equally decisive.
The edges act as “gates”: they define precisely where each field of experience begins and ends. Depending on the system of calculation used, these edges may change - and with them the interpretation changes.
The basic house systems
There are different ways to divide the astrological chart into houses. The most well-known systems are:
Placidus. most widespread in modern Western astrology. It is based on the time it takes for a planet to move from the horizon to the midheaven. Alcabitius: an older system with roots in Arabic and medieval astrology, often used in traditional approaches. Regiomontanus: Particularly popular in Renaissance astrology and in forecasting techniques. Whole Sign: The oldest system, where each sign corresponds entirely to a house, with no intermediate cusps.
Each system can significantly change the position of the houses and edges, which directly affects the resolution of the map.
Which system is used and why?;
There is no one “right” system - but there are appropriate systems depending on the type of astrology being applied.
In Hellenistic astrology, the Whole Sign is preferred, because it is aligned with the philosophy and techniques of the time. In modern astrology, Placidus predominates, as it offers greater psychological detail. In selective astrology, more “mathematical” systems such as Regiomontanus and/or Alcabitous are often used for greater accuracy in timing. In fact, since ancient times there have been techniques interpreted from the whole sign system.
The choice of system is not random - it affects the way we “read” reality through the map. If we choose a type of astrology and a system that do not go together, then the interpretation of the chart... goes out the window!
Houses are not just a technical detail. They are the key to translating your astrological chart into real life experiences. By understanding them, you begin to see where events unfold, where energy is focused and where you are called to evolve. Despite the natal, the prediction part can have major discrepancies if an inappropriate system is chosen for the interpretation technique.
