What is Reiki after all and why does it continue to concern so many people?

Reiki is a practice that doesn't try to convince you - it lets you experience it. It does not belong strictly to medicine, nor does it belong exclusively to spirituality. It lies at an intermediate point, where the body, nervous system, psychology and energy (however one perceives it) begin to connect.

The word comes from the Japanese: “Rei” means «universal» or «higher consciousness» and “Ki” means the vital energy that pervades all living beings. Similar concepts exist in many cultures - indicating that the need to explain this «something more» we feel in our bodies is timeless.

The modern form of Reiki was formed by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century in Japan. From there it traveled to the West and evolved into various schools. But the essence has not changed: contact, intention and relaxation can bring a person back to a more balanced state.

On a practical level, Reiki is done by placing the hands on or near the body. The practitioner acts as a channel - not «giving» anything of his or her own, but allowing the flow to be directed where it needs to go. Whether you look at it energetically or neurobiologically, the effect most people describe is common: deep relaxation and release.

The different types of Reiki and the return to the essence

Over the years many different Reiki schools have been created. Some kept more faithfully to the Japanese philosophy and others evolved through Western influences, adding more techniques, symbols and interpretations.

Usui Reiki is the basis of almost all systems. From there emerged forms such as:

  • Karuna Reiki, which focuses more on emotional healing,
  • Holy Fire Reiki, which emphasizes the spiritual experience,
  • Kundalini Reiki, which combines different energy philosophies.

And yet, as the space evolves, there is something very interesting: many people who have gone through various schools eventually return to simplicity.

And that's where Komyo Reiki stands out.

Komyo ReikiDo, created by Hyakuten Inamoto, is considered by many to be one of the most authentic expressions of Japanese Reiki. It is not based on complexity, nor does it seek to impress. Instead, it returns to the essence: presence, serenity and simple contact.

His philosophy is almost stripped of superfluous elements. The calmer the man is in himself, the more naturally the practice works. Not much is needed. And somewhere in there, you begin to realize that maybe they never were needed.

What Reiki helps with - beyond the obvious

Most people come into contact with Reiki because they feel tired. Not only physically, but especially mentally.

In practice, they state:

  • deep relaxation
  • stress reduction
  • better sleep
  • emotional discharge
  • sense of inner balance

But where it really stands out is in the emotional part.

The number one reason someone turns to Reiki is because they have been through a difficult experience and are seeking relief. An intense breakup, a loss, a period that has torn him apart internally. In these cases, Reiki acts almost like a «pause» in the chaos.

Many people who have tried it report that they felt relief from the very first session. And with repetition - either daily, weekly, or at more infrequent intervals, depending on the depth of the issue - they describe a sense of release that comes more quickly than they expected.

Like finding, in a way, a «painkiller for the soul».

Reiki and economics - a less discussed side

Another reason why many people turn to Reiki is economics.

Not in the sense that it «makes money» in some magical way. But in a more profound and essential mechanism: it changes our relationship with money.

At the energy level, the first three energy centres are associated with the material world, security, value and survival. When there is tension or blockage on these levels, they often appear:

  • fears around money
  • feeling that «I am not worthy»
  • difficulty in claiming or accepting abundance

Through the balancing of these centers, the way one thinks begins to change. Not only on an emotional level, but also on a perceptual level.

Suddenly:

  • sees opportunities that he/she did not notice before
  • dares to move differently
  • does not sabotage himself in the same way

And so, without money necessarily being the goal, doors begin to open that before seemed non-existent.

What science says

Reiki has been studied mainly for its effect on stress, pain and quality of life.

Thrane and Cohen's (2014) review showed that there is evidence that it can help reduce anxiety and pain, and subsequent studies have documented:

  • improvement in overall well-being
  • reduction of tension
  • better psychological state

However, there is still no confirmed scientific mechanism to explain the «energy transmission». Many researchers attribute the effects:

  • relaxation of the nervous system
  • to physical contact
  • a sense of care and security

This does not invalidate the experience. It just shows that we may not yet have the tools to fully explain it.

Why it finally works for so many people

Perhaps because it gives something that is missing: space.

Space to relax, to feel, to unload, without having to explain everything.

And in a world that is constantly operating in tension, this pause is itself profoundly transformative.

My personal perspective

I've always been a traditionalist.

I wasn't attracted by the complicated versions or the need to make something more impressive than it is. Instead, I was won over by simplicity.

That's why I chose to train in Komyo Reiki.

I use it every day and what I can say is that it changes the way you experience life. Not with intensity, but with stability. With calm. With a sense of coming back to yourself.

And when that starts to happen, everything around you responds differently.
